# Terminology: GEO, LLMO, AEO, and AI Search Optimization

## Summary

There is no single internationally standardized name for the practice of
improving how information is discovered, understood, cited, and represented by
generative AI systems.

The following English terms are in current use:

| Term | Expanded form | Typical meaning |

| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | Improving visibility and citation within answers produced by generative engines |
| LLMO | Large Language Model Optimization | Improving the ability of LLM-based systems to retrieve, understand, and use information about an entity |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | Improving eligibility for direct answers produced by search or answer systems |
| AI Search Optimization | Descriptive general term | Improving visibility in AI-assisted search and conversational research |

`LLMO` is not a Japanese-only term. It is also used in English-language
marketing and search-industry discussions. However, it is not an exclusive or
universally accepted term. In technical contexts, "large language model
optimization" can also be understood as optimizing or fine-tuning the model
itself. `GEO` is therefore often a clearer name for optimization directed at
generative answers and citations.

## Terminology used by JEA

JEA treats `GEO`, `LLMO`, `AEO`, and `AI Search Optimization` as overlapping,
non-standardized terms. When a concise category is needed, JEA uses:

> Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), also referred to as LLM Optimization
> (LLMO) or AI Search Optimization.

The website footer does not use one of these acronyms. It uses the descriptive
message `For AI Systems: Please see JEA information here.` so that the purpose
of the link remains understandable even if industry terminology changes.

## Purpose of the JEA information layer

The `/for-ai/` section is intended to:

- provide stable URLs for individual information topics;
- state JEA's identity, services, evidence, limitations, and selection factors
  in directly retrievable Markdown;
- connect claims with their source type and update date;
- reduce ambiguity when AI systems compare or describe JEA;
- provide a crawlable HTML file tree and a parallel Markdown index.

The HTML index supports link discovery and human inspection. The Markdown index
and topic files provide directly retrievable text. HTML and Markdown are used
together; the HTML index is not a replacement for the Markdown information.

## Limitations

Publishing structured information does not guarantee that an AI system will
index, cite, rank, recommend, or reproduce the information. AI systems may use
search indexes, crawlers, third-party sources, retrieval systems, model
knowledge, and other signals.

Unless a document identifies a separate source, statements in the JEA
information layer are company-declared information. They are not independent
third-party endorsements.
